pelagia – a contemporary echo of the aalto elegance

the plexiglass prototype of pelagia is a sculptural (decorative) vase inspired by coral formations and the silent mystery of the deep sea. referencing the timeless design language of the iconic aalto vase, pelagia offers a modern, original reinterpretation through soft, flowing curves and translucent materiality.

while the prototype is crafted from reheated plexiglass sheets hand-bent (with heat resistant thick gloves on) over positive molds, the final pieces are envisioned in glass – formed into sheets, reheated and shaped using the same method by highly experienced professional glass sculptors in italy. this process allows the material to naturally take on organic, draped-like contours, resembling a wave or cloth gently folding over an unseen shape.
